SCENE 01 / NIGHT VISION FILMING
Night Vision Filming in Saudi Arabia
Low-light and infrared cinematography for your Saudi production.
Night vision filming uses special infrared and low-light cameras. They capture footage where normal cameras fail. In Saudi Arabia, this is key for filming wildlife at night. We log the iconic Arabian oryx in the covered reserves. We film rare Arabian leopards in the Asir highlands. We shoot camel herds at desert rest stops and flamingos along the Red Sea coast. We also handle dark-sky shoots in AlUla, the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali), and the NEOM region. There, low light pollution gives top star-shooting conditions.
We source night vision and infrared camera kits. These come through Jax Film Studios, NEOM Studios, and Riyadh and Jeddah rental houses. We set up skilled crews who know AlUla, the Asir Mountains, the Red Sea coast, and the Empty Quarter. Our team works with Film AlUla, the Saudi Film Commission, and the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). Together we secure permits for heritage zones, GACA-controlled areas, and covered reserves.

On Location
IR + low-light capture for AlUla nocturnal wildlife, Empty Quarter dark-sky
Night-vision and low-light filming in Saudi Arabia serves three main use cases. First, wildlife documentary at night. AlUla Sharaan Nature Reserve sits under the Royal Commission for AlUla, with rewilded Arabian oryx and Nubian ibex. The Asir Mountains hold a critically endangered Arabian leopard breeding program, plus Arabian wolf and sand cat. Both need IR-aided filming to catch behaviour at night. Second, military, security, and training content. We shoot this for the Saudi Armed Forces and Ministry of Interior under a controlled permit. Third, dramatic night work for global shoots. Kandahar (Gerard Butler, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, AlUla and NEOM, $43M budget) ran many night scenes. They used added IR lighting on AlUla canyon and Empty Quarter exteriors. The Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) and AlUla have cool, clear, dry nights (5-10°C in winter). These give top dark-sky settings. Think Milky Way arc, satellite trails, and aurora-grade star photos during solar maximum.
Our gear runs the top global low-light and IR tier. We use the Sony A7S III, FX3, and FX9 at base ISO 12800-25600 with native dual-gain. We use the ARRI Alexa 35 with Reveal Color Science 800/3200 dual native. We use the RED V-Raptor 8K VV at ISO 800-1600 with wide low-light grading room. Our IR-aided systems add more reach. The Canon ME20F-SH is an ISO 400,000+ ultra-low-light cinema camera. The Watec WAT-910HX handles hidden-camera wildlife work. IR-converted Sony A7S bodies cover full-range surveillance. For IR lighting we use the Aputure Amaran IR and the ARRI Orbiter with the IR-cut filter removed. The Litepanels Astra IP IR adds fill. On permits, the Saudi Wildlife Authority (now under the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture) clears nocturnal wildlife. RCU clears AlUla night scenes. Military-zone clearance covers Tabuk near-border work. Cultural Development Fund rebates cover night-vision spend at 35% plus a 5% Saudization uplift. For the climate window, October-April gives ideal dark skies and low heat for a clean sensor noise floor. June-September holds heat into the night above 30°C, which hurts sensor performance.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What night vision technologies do you use?
We source Gen 3 image intensifiers, digital night vision, Sony a7S high-ISO cameras, and infrared-ready sensors. These come through Riyadh and Jeddah rental houses. The gear we pick depends on your shoot. We choose one kit for Arabian oryx in covered reserves and another for the Empty Quarter under starlight.
Can you film Saudi wildlife in complete darkness?
Yes. We film in zero-lux dark with IR lighting. We do not disturb the animals at night. This is key for Arabian oryx, leopards, desert foxes, and migratory birds. We shoot them across the Asir highlands, the AlUla heritage area, and the Red Sea coastline.
What's the difference between night vision looks?
Image intensifiers give the classic green-tint look. IR cameras make black-and-white visuals. High-ISO cameras capture true color in very low light. We match the tech to your creative brief.
Is IR illumination invisible to animals?
Near-infrared (850nm) is invisible to humans and most desert wildlife. 940nm far-infrared cannot be seen at all. Both are ideal for filming oryx, leopards, and gazelles in Saudi reserves. The animals stay calm and undisturbed.
What resolution is possible at night?
Modern systems capture 4K and beyond in very low light. The real resolution depends on the light around you and the gear you pick. We advise on the best fit for your shoot.
Can you film night landscapes in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. We use high-ISO cameras to capture moonlit Hegra rock formations in AlUla. We shoot Milky Way star photos over the Empty Quarter. We film starscapes above the Asir Mountains. The Saudi deserts have some of the world's clearest dark skies, with very low light pollution.
