SCENE 01 / THERMAL IMAGING

Thermal Imaging in Saudi Arabia

Heat visualization for your Saudi production.

Scroll

Thermal imaging cameras read infrared radiation. They show heat that normal cameras cannot see. In Saudi Arabia this helps night desert wildlife filming. We track the iconic Arabian oryx and rare Arabian leopards in the Asir highlands. We follow camel herds across the Empty Quarter and flamingos along the Red Sea coast. We also cover Saudi Aramco refineries and Jubail's chemical complex, the world's largest. We shoot the NEOM giga-project build and AlUla's heritage sites too.

We source pro FLIR thermal systems and infrared cinematographers across Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. We work with the Saudi Film Commission, Film AlUla, NEOM Studios, and Jax Film Studios in Riyadh. Our team clears gear through ZATCA customs and gets GACA aerial permits. We arrange access to Diriyah, Hegra, and other heritage sites. We make sure your thermal footage qualifies for the 40% Saudi Film Incentive cash rebates.

FLIR + Workswell thermal for Saudi Aramco, NEOM construction, wildlife docs

Infrared imaging in Saudi Arabia serves three main areas. First comes industrial and chemical-plant inspection. Saudi Aramco sites span the Eastern Province. These include AlKhobar, Dammam, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq, and Ghawar Field. Ghawar Field is the world's largest conventional oil field. They use infrared imaging for pipeline checks, refinery hotspot tracking, and flare-stack study. This footage feeds corporate-communications and TV-documentary content. Saudi Electricity Company power sites and SABIC chemical plants fit a similar mold.

Second comes construction records. NEOM (The Line, Trojena, Oxagon, Sindalah) runs multi-year time-lapse for envelope-performance studies. We also cover Diriyah Gate, JAX District, and Riyadh's KAFD (King Abdullah Financial District) build work. Third comes wildlife documentary. We do Arabian leopard (critically endangered) night-detection for Asir Mountains breeding-program work. We film Arabian oryx and Nubian ibex in AlUla's Sharaan Nature Reserve. We also film military and security training, with the right permits.

Our gear runs deep. We use FLIR T-Series and GF-Series cameras for industrial inspection (mostly high-resolution 640×480 micro-bolometer). We fly Workswell WIRIS Pro on DJI Matrice 350 RTK drones for aerial mapping. We use FLIR M-Series with DroneCAN integrations for production-tier work. We fit Tau 640 OEM-class cameras into custom housings for narrative shoots.

Permits get tricky. GACA (General Authority of Civil Aviation) clears drone-IR flight. RCU handles AlUla airspace. The NEOM authority handles its own zone. The Saudi Wildlife Authority signs off on wildlife IR work. Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and NEOM gate access to their own sites, often more tightly than the government does. The Cultural Development Fund pays back 35% of your infrared imaging costs. It adds a 5% Saudization top-up when the work goes through Saudi-registered facilities.

Heat rules matter too. The cameras derate above 50°C ambient. So June-September limits apply outdoors.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What can thermal cameras show?

Thermal cameras read heat radiation and show temperature gaps. They can show body heat, engine heat, and electrical hotspots. They also show heat escaping from buildings, and fresh handprints on surfaces.

What resolution is available?

Pro thermal cameras range from 320x240 to 640x480 and higher. That is lower than visible light cameras. But modern thermal sensors give crisp visuals fit for HD and 4K production.

What are the color palette options?

Thermal cameras give many palettes—white-hot, black-hot, ironbow (rainbow), and more. Each one gives a different look. You can pick the palette based on creative needs.

Can you use thermal for wildlife?

Yes. Thermal imaging is great for Saudi desert wildlife. It spots Arabian oryx and gazelles on cool nights in covered reserves. It finds the rare Arabian leopard in the Asir highlands. It tracks camel herds across the Empty Quarter. It also reveals flamingo flocks along the Red Sea coastline.

Is thermal footage useful for documentaries?

Thermal is powerful for Saudi documentaries. It shows the heat output of Aramco refineries and the Jubail chemical complex. It shows flare-stack work and the cooling systems behind Riyadh's skyscrapers and KAFD. It can also log solar power sites and Vision 2030 mega-projects.

Can you composite thermal footage?

Yes. You can composite thermal footage with visible-light footage. You can also use it as a creative element. Post-prod can boost thermal visuals for visual effects or science talks.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with Night Vision Filming, Helicopter Filming, and Car Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Lighting & Grip and Steadicam & Gimbal Operators.
