Here is how this works in practice. The gaffer and lighting team translate the Director of Photography's vision into practical lighting setups on set. In Saudi Arabia, gaffers work across the Kingdom's fast expanding production infrastructure. This includes NEOM's emerging studio facilities, Riyadh production hubs, and the dramatic desert landscapes of AlUla, managing extreme heat and intense sunlight.

Here is the short of it. We assemble skilled gaffer and lighting teams matched to your production's scale, style, and tech needs. Under Vision 2030 and the Saudi Film Commission's support, gear availability is expanding fast through both local and global rental suppliers.

Gaffers who balance AlUla golden hour against muezzin call timing

Saudi-resident gaffers and best-boys come up through several training pipelines. These have MBC Studios Riyadh and Jeddah, Telfaz11 commercial work, and increasingly the Red Sea Global Film Festival labs.

Global gaffers fly in on 90-minute DXB to RUH flights for tier-1 shoots. Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie, dir. Rupert Wyatt) ran a hybrid Saudi-global electric department at AlUla. Kandahar (Gerard Butler, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, $43M budget) brought an UK lighting team to AlUla and NEOM, with local best-boy support.

Our roster handles several operational realities. AlUla golden hour windows compress hard against the muezzin call-to-prayer. Maghrib in specific collapses the post-sunset interview window.

Here is how this works in practice. Stage power redundancy matters too. NEOM Bajdah Studios runs that across its four sound stages and 9,000m² volume. Diriyah Al-Turaif heritage permits forbid stake-anchored stands on mud-brick surfaces — we use weighted-base alternatives sourced locally. Riyadh Boulevard after-hours load-in slots run only 11pm-5am, granted by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).

Gear ease covers the full global package list. LED options have ARRI SkyPanel S360-C and S60-C, Aputure 1200d and 600d Pro, Litepanels Gemini, and KinoFlo Celeb 850. Classic sources have 1.2K, 2.5K, and 5K HMI Pars, plus the 18K Arrimax for desert daytime fill. That fill is needed because 50,000-100,000 lux of ambient sunlight needs hard-fill rather than diffusion.

Hire houses stock today's-spec packages. The list has Filmquip Dubai (cross-border), Picture Works, and NEOM-resident inventory. We set up ATA carnet through Saudi Customs (ZATCA) for global gear flying in via Emirates SkyCargo.

Gaffers handle wireless and thermal compliance. CST wireless DMX permits apply where the build calls for it. Gaffers brief crew on the 45-50°C June-September thermal derating window. HMI ballasts spec to 40°C ambient, and beyond that they thermal-shutdown.

Gaffers also integrate with the Saudi Film Commission Cultural Development Fund rebates manifest. That way the lighting department day-rates feed cleanly into the 35% plus 5% Saudization uplift calculation.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Saudi rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians. While larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are fluent English Saudi-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
