Scroll

The gaffer and lighting team turn the Director of Photography's vision into real lighting setups on set. In Saudi Arabia, gaffers work across the Kingdom's fast growing production base. This covers NEOM's new studios, Riyadh production hubs, and the bold desert sights of AlUla. They handle extreme heat and harsh sun.

We build skilled gaffer and lighting teams matched to your scale, style, and tech needs. Vision 2030 and the Saudi Film Commission back this work. Gear is now easier to get through both local and global rental suppliers.

Gaffers who balance AlUla golden hour against muezzin call timing

Saudi-resident gaffers and best-boys came up through MBC Studios Riyadh + Jeddah, Telfaz11 commercial work, and more and more through Red Sea International Film Festival labs. Global gaffers fly in on 90-minute DXB→RUH flights for tier-1 shoots. Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie, dir. Rupert Wyatt) ran a mixed Saudi-global electric department at AlUla. Kandahar (Gerard Butler, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, $43M budget) brought a UK lighting team to AlUla + NEOM with local best-boy support. Our roster handles the on-set realities. AlUla golden hour windows squeeze hard against muezzin call-to-prayer, and Maghrib in particular shuts the post-sunset interview window. NEOM Bajdah Studios needs backup stage power across the 4 sound stages and 9,000m² volume. Diriyah Al-Turaif heritage permits ban stake-anchored stands on mud-brick surfaces, so we use weighted-base stands sourced locally. Riyadh Boulevard after-hours load-in slots run from \11pm-5am only, and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) grants them.

Our crews know the full global package list. This covers ARRI SkyPanel S360-C and S60-C, Aputure 1200d/600d Pro, Litepanels Gemini, and KinoFlo Celeb 850. It also covers classic tungsten, like 1.2K/2.5K/5K HMI Pars and 18K Arrimax, for desert daytime fill. There 50,000-100,000 lux of sun needs hard fill, not diffusion. Local Saudi hire houses stock current-spec packages, including Filmquip Dubai cross-border, Picture Works, and NEOM-resident inventory. We set up the ATA carnet through Saudi Customs (ZATCA) for global gear flying in on Emirates SkyCargo. Gaffers carry CST wireless DMX permits when the build needs them. They brief their crew on the 45-50°C June-September heat derating window. HMI ballasts are rated to 40°C ambient, and past that they thermal-shutdown. They also tie into the Saudi Film Commission Cultural Development Fund rebates manifest. That way the lighting department day-rates feed cleanly into the 35% + 5% Saudization uplift sum.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

The gaffer heads the electrical and lighting department. They carry out the DP's lighting vision. They design setups, run the electric crew, rig gear, and keep power safe across the shoot.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has a few roles. The Gaffer heads it. The Best Boy Electric assists and runs crew and gear. Electricians and Sparks set up and run the lights. Larger shoots add Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly booked apart. We can set up gear packages from Saudi rental houses to pair with your crew booking. Some gaffers own gear for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on your shoot's scale. Small shoots may need just a gaffer. Medium shoots mostly need a gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians. Larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are skilled at working with global cinematographers. They know global terms, methods, and workflow needs. Many speak fluent English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up generator hire and power distribution gear through our rental partners. Generator operators come in crew packages for shoots that need major power setups.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
