Saudi 1st AC focus pulling — Preston FI+Z / cmotion, ARRI WCU-4, AlUla heat-stable wireless follow focus

Our Saudi 1st AC focus pullers run the top wireless follow-focus systems. The kit covers Preston FI+Z, Hand Unit 3, and Micro Force. Cmotion cPRO and ARRI WCU-4 are also standard. Tilta Nucleus M and N systems round out the choices.

Here is how this works in practice. Camera bodies cover the top cinema tier. We work with ARRI ALEXA 35, Mini LF, and ALEXA 65, plus RED V-RAPTOR XL and Komodo-X, and Sony VENICE 2. Lens choices have Cooke S7/i, ARRI Signature Primes, Zeiss Supreme Primes, Panavision Ultra Vista, and anamorphic Hawk and Atlas Orion glass.

Recent global 1st AC work shows the range. Kandahar (Gerard Butler 2023, AlUla and NEOM, $43M, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, DP MacGregor IAC), Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie 2024, AlUla, dir. Rupert Wyatt, DP Polly Morgan ASC BSC), Cherry (Apple TV+, AlUla), Hellraiser plates (AlUla 2022), and Born a King (2019) all used Saudi or fly-in 1st ACs.

Here is the short of it. Saudi-resident DPs Wael Abu Mansour and Ahmad Salman anchor the domestic roster. Studio work runs across NEOM Bajdah Studios (9,000 m², four sound stages, opened 2022, the largest in MENA), MBC Studios Riyadh and Jeddah, Telfaz11 Studios, Manga Productions Riyadh, Pixomondo Riyadh LED Volume, and the NEOM XR Lab Unreal Engine 5 virtual shoot sites.

Here is the breakdown. Heat-stable focus operation is required in summer. From June to September, 45-50°C is normal. Heat-rated lens motors (Preston DM2 or DM5) are needed. Lubricant viscosity on cine zooms (Angenieux EZ / Optimo, Fujinon Premista) needs attention. Focus-collar calibration runs more often.

Winter brings the opposite problem. AlUla desert nights drop to 5-10°C — that demands condensation running for follow-focus encoders. Spring sandstorms (haboob) need sealed motor housings.

Wireless planning routes through CST (Communications, Space and Technology Commission). That covers FI+Z 900MHz and 2.4GHz transmitter licensing. Global shoots set up frequency assignments alongside Teradek Bolt and other wireless video gear.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Compliance covers many bases. GCAM type, GOSI payroll sign-ups, 15% VAT, and Saudization Nitaqat quotas all apply. Nitaqat hires drive a 5% rebates uplift on the Cultural Development Fund's 40% cash rebates. Ministry of Human Resources work permits also apply.

Here is how the picture comes as one. Schedules account for the five daily prayer pauses (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) plus Friday around 12:00-13:30. During Ramadan, the iftar-to-suhoor 9pm-2am window is peak production time. The workweek runs Sunday-Thursday. There is no domestic Saudi 1st AC union — global IATSE Local 600 (US), ACO (UK), and BSC focus-puller-tier work routes via Dubai EPS bureaus (Entertainment Partners ME, Talent Bank Dubai).
