SCENE 01 / HELICOPTER FILMING

Helicopter Filming in Saudi Arabia

Large-scale aerial cinematography with gyro-stabilized camera systems across Saudi Arabia.

Scroll

Helicopter filming gives you bold aerial views. It carries more weight, flies longer, and climbs higher than drones can. In Saudi Arabia, our helicopters use gyro-stabilized mounts. They capture sweeping shots over the Hegra rock formations of AlUla, the NEOM coastline, the Asir highlands and Sarawat range, historic Diriyah, Jeddah's Al Balad, and the vast dunes of the Rub' al Khali.

We set up helicopter filming with GACA-certified aviation operators and skilled aerial cinematographers across Saudi Arabia. Our team handles General Authority of Civil Aviation flight sign-off, Ministry of Media approvals, Royal Commission for AlUla planning, and safety planning. Your shoot captures stunning footage over Riyadh, Jeddah, AlUla, or NEOM while meeting the highest aviation standards.

GACA + RCU + NEOM-cleared helicopter aerials over AlUla, Empty Quarter, Red Sea

Helicopter aerial in Saudi Arabia routes through Saudi Aviation Services, MENA Aviation, and Falcon Aviation, which flies cross-border from Abu Dhabi. NEOM uses its own operator, Sabre Aviation. We match the aircraft to the brief. The Airbus H125 / AS350 handles tight canyon work around Hegra and the AlUla wadis. The H145 / EC135 carries more weight over Empty Quarter dune shots with Cineflex Elite or Shotover F1 nose-mount gyro-stabilized rigs. The AStar B3e suits high-altitude work in the Asir Mountains and the Abha highlands, where summer adds a 2,500m+ density-altitude penalty. The Airbus H225 / Bell 412 takes on heavy-lift and multi-camera jobs. Kandahar (Gerard Butler, 2023, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, $43M, AlUla + NEOM) ran Cineflex Elite on an H125 platform with MacGregor IAC as aerial DP. Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie, dir. Rupert Wyatt, AlUla, Polly Morgan ASC BSC) ran much the same.

Permit planning runs across many bodies at once. GACA (General Authority of Civil Aviation) certifies the base operator and the pilot. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) covers any flight inside AlUla airspace. RCU sets hard buffers around Hegra, the UNESCO 2008 Nabataean tombs, Elephant Rock, and AlUla Old Town. It also caps altitude near the Maraya concert hall. The NEOM authority covers flights over Sindalah, The Line, Trojena, and Oxagon. Mecca + Medina sit inside military no-fly zones, with no exceptions. Near-border zones around Tabuk need extra Ministry of Defense clearance. We pre-clear 4-6 weeks ahead for tier-1 work. Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) flights launch from Sharurah airfield, with fuel-cache plans for the deep-desert legs. Red Sea coast flights launch from Yanbu, Jeddah, or NEOM Sharma. The best climate window is October-April, with ideal density-altitude and clear views. From June-September, 45-50°C heat pushes heavy-payload flights into early-morning or dusk windows. Spring haboob sandstorms ground all flights. Cultural Development Fund rebates cover helicopter spend at a 35% base plus a 5% Saudization uplift.

FAQ

Aerial Cinematography Expertise

When should I choose helicopter over drone filming?

Helicopters suit long aerial takes over the desert and fast action shots. They carry heavy cinema cameras and cover NEOM or the Empty Quarter from far. They also work where drones cannot fly, since GACA bars drones near airports, holy sites, Riyadh, and NEOM or AlUla security zones. For quick setups and lower heights, drones may cost less.

What camera systems do you use for helicopter filming?

We run gyro-stabilized systems, including Cineflex and Shotover mounts. They carry ARRI, RED, and other cinema cameras. They keep footage rock-steady through bold flight moves. They also let us control the camera by remote.

Can you film over AlUla or NEOM?

Yes, with proper sign-off. We set up AlUla filming through Film AlUla, part of the Royal Commission for AlUla. NEOM runs its own security approval process. The holy sites in Mecca and Medina stay off-limits. We work with GACA, the Ministry of Media, and local commissions to secure the approvals you need.

What types of helicopters do you use?

We work with many helicopter types based on your needs. Small aircraft handle tight canyon moves around Hegra. Larger ones carry heavy camera systems and fly long over the Empty Quarter. We pick the aircraft by desert conditions, shot needs, and the weight it must carry.

How do you handle air-to-ground coordination?

We use pro radio kit for live talk between the helicopter crew and ground teams. Directors can speak with pilots and camera operators. We give a video downlink so you can track aerial shots live.

How far in advance should we book helicopter filming?

We advise at least 4-6 weeks for helicopter work in Saudi Arabia. That gives time for GACA sign-off, Ministry of Media approvals, and NEOM or AlUla joint security clearances. Shoots near holy sites or royal palaces may need more lead time.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with Aerial Drone Services, Car Filming, and Vehicle Mounting for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Camera & Cinematography and Drone Videography.
