On Location

LTO-9 archival and sovereign-data preservation across Saudi Arabia — AWS Saudi Region Riyadh, NDMO-compliant data residency, partnerships with KAPSARC, Darah, and Ithra King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture for heritage and broadcast archive.

We build archival pipelines on LTO-9 tape (18 TB native, 45 TB compressed per cartridge). It is the industry-standard physical archive. We pair it with three-copy redundancy across sites set far apart. Tape vaults sit at MBC Studios Riyadh. Regional partners run more vaults at Image Production House Dubai. Cloud cold storage runs on AWS Saudi Region (Riyadh, opened 2024. NDMO compliant for sovereign content), Google Cloud Dammam Region, or Microsoft Azure Saudi regions. Asset prep follows the OAIS reference model (ISO 14721). We create XML-based MAM metadata (Avid Interplay, Dalet Galaxy, Vidispine). We checksum each file (MD5, SHA-256, xxhash). We wrap masters as JPEG 2000 IMF packages for streaming originals. We use DPX uncompressed sequences for archival masters (10-bit log). We use ProRes 422 HQ for proxy circulation. We support broadcast archive work for MBC, Al Arabiya, and Saudi Broadcasting Corporation. There, AS-11 MXF AVC-Intra 100 wraps are the standard transmission archive format.

Saudi Arabia's archive heritage runs deep. The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) holds the country's main historical collection. This includes pre-cinema-era audio recordings, photography, and oral history. Ithra King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran keeps the Saudi Film Festival catalog (since 2008) and modern cultural work. KAPSARC (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center) archives industrial and policy media. The Saudi Film Commission's catalog ties into the wider National Cultural Strategy archival framework. The pre-2018 cinema-closure period left a thin theatrical record. That makes saving new work matter. Telfaz11's Sattar (2022), Haifaa al-Mansour's Wadjda (2012), Shahad Ameen's Scales, and Red Sea International Film Festival features since 2021 are above all valuable. CITC and NDMO sovereign-data rules need Saudi-residency for politically sensitive content. We route that work through AWS Saudi Region in Riyadh. Cross-border catalog work syncs with TwoFour54 Abu Dhabi and Image Nation Abu Dhabi archives. We bill in SAR, add 15% VAT, and work the Sunday-Thursday week.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LTO tape archiving?

LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is the industry standard for long-term media archiving. LTO tapes last a long time (30+ years). They hold a lot and cost little per terabyte. We use LTFS (Linear Tape File System). It makes tapes as easy to use as hard drives. You still get the safety of offline storage.

How do you ensure data integrity over time?

We use many safeguards. We run checksum checks at each stage. We keep backup copies in different places. We track storage sites at the site level. We run regular integrity checks too. Our systems flag any issue on their own. That way we fix it before data is lost.

What happens when formats become obsolete?

We watch format lifecycles closely. We plan moves before a format dies out. Our preservation plan keeps access to old playback systems. We move content to current formats when it makes sense. So your content stays easy to reach, no matter how tech changes.

Can you help organize and catalog existing archives?

Yes. We give full digital asset management services. We catalog your current archives. We build searchable metadata databases. We set up MAM systems too. We can turn messy media libraries into neat, easy-to-reach archives with full search skills.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with Broadcast Delivery Services, Digital Cinema Package (DCP), and Format Conversion & Encoding Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Delivery & Output Services and Audio Mixing & Mastering.
