On Location

LTO-9 archival and sovereign-data preservation across Saudi Arabia — AWS Saudi Region Riyadh, NDMO-compliant data residency, partnerships with KAPSARC, Darah, and Ithra King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture for heritage and broadcast archive.

We build archive pipelines on LTO-9 tape. Each cartridge holds 18 TB native, 45 TB compressed. LTO-9 is the industry-standard physical archive.

Here is how this works in practice. We pair tape with three-copy redundancy across geographically separated sites. Tape vaults sit at MBC Studios Riyadh. Regional partner facilities at Image Production House Dubai hold the second copy. Cloud-based cold storage on AWS Saudi Region (Riyadh, opened 2024) holds the third — that storage is NDMO compliant for sovereign content. Alternatives have Google Cloud Dammam Region or Microsoft Azure Saudi regions.

Asset prep follows the OAIS reference model (ISO 14721). We create XML-based MAM metadata through Avid Interplay, Dalet Galaxy, or Vidispine. Each file gets checksums — MD5, SHA-256, and xxhash. Masters wrap as JPEG 2000 IMF packages for streaming originals. Archive masters wrap as DPX uncompressed sequences at 10-bit log. ProRes 422 HQ covers proxy circulation.

We support broadcast archive workflows for MBC, Al Arabiya, and Saudi Broadcasting Corporation. AS-11 MXF AVC-Intra 100 wraps are the standard transmission archive format.

Saudi Arabia's archive heritage runs deep. The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) holds the country's primary historical collection. That has pre-cinema-era audio recordings, photography, and oral history.

Here is the short of it. Other major archives feed the system. Ithra (King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture) in Dhahran preserves the Saudi Film Festival catalog (since 2008) plus today's cultural production. KAPSARC (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center) archives industrial and policy media. The Saudi Film Commission's catalog ties into the wider National Cultural Strategy archive framework.

Here is the breakdown. The pre-2018 cinema-closure period produced a thin theatrical record. That makes today's preservation above all valuable. Recent titles have Telfaz11's Sattar (2022), Haifaa al-Mansour's Wadjda (2012), Shahad Ameen's Scales, and Red Sea Global Film Festival features since 2021.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. CITC and NDMO sovereign-data rules need Saudi-residency for politically sensitive content. We route those workflows through AWS Saudi Region in Riyadh. Cross-border catalog work syncs with TwoFour54 Abu Dhabi and Image Nation Abu Dhabi archives. Billing is in SAR, with 15% VAT and a Sunday-Thursday workweek.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LTO tape archiving?

Here is the breakdown. LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is the industry standard for long-term media archiving. LTO tapes give top longevity (30+ years), high capacity, and low cost per terabyte. We use LTFS (Linear Tape File System) which makes tapes as easy to use as hard drives while giving the security gains of offline storage.

How do you ensure data integrity over time?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We implement many safeguards including checksum verification at each stage, redundant copies stored in different locations, site-level tracking of storage facilities, and regular integrity checks. Our systems automatically flag any issues so they can be addressed before data loss occurs.

What happens when formats become obsolete?

Here is how the picture comes together. We proactively monitor format lifecycles and plan migrations before obsolescence becomes key. Our preservation strategy has keeping access to legacy playback systems and systematically migrating content to today's formats when appropriate, making sure your content stays easy to reach no matter technology changes.

Can you help organize and catalog existing archives?

Here is what we have to work with. Yes, we give full digital asset management services including cataloging existing archives, creating searchable metadata databases, and implementing MAM systems. We can help transform disorganized media libraries into well-structured, easily easy to reach archives with full search skills.

Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with Broadcast Delivery Services, Digital Cinema Package (DCP), and Format Conversion & Encoding Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Delivery & Output Services and Audio Mixing & Mastering.
