Here is how this works in practice. The gaffer is the chief lighting technician, responsible for designing and executing the lighting plan set up by the director of photography. In Saudi Arabia, where shoots shoot in varied environments from Riyadh studios to locations across Jeddah and beyond, skilled gaffers must handle differing power infrastructure, weather conditions, and local gear availability from Saudi rental houses.
Here is the short of it. Our NeedAFixer network connects you with skilled gaffers and grips across Saudi Arabia who work seamlessly with your cinematography team. Our pros are skilled in studio and location lighting, rigging for challenging environments, and managing the electrical and mechanical systems that modern shoots demand—with strong connections to Saudi gear suppliers and rental facilities.

On Location
Saudi gaffer / grip — ARRI / SkyPanel / Astera, condor + crane rigging, desert sun-bounce, AlUla night exterior
Here is how this works in practice. Our Saudi gaffer and grip teams deploy a deep fixture inventory. LED fixtures have ARRI SkyPanel S60-C and S360-C, ARRI Orbiter, Aputure Nova P600C and LS 600d Pro, Astera Titan and Helios tubes, and Quasar Q-LED tubes. HMI heads have M40, M90, Joker Bug 1600, and 12K — used for high-key day exteriors.
The grip fleet is as well deep. Stands have Matthews Studio Gear Hi-Hi Rollers, Master Combo Stands, MAX Stands, and Junior plus Senior C-Stands. Frames have 12x12, 20x20, and 30x30 silks and ultra-bounce. Dolly track options have Chapman PeeWee, Hybrid, and Hustler. Condor 60ft and 80ft units plus Technocrane and Scorpio crane rigs handle high-rig lighting.
Recent global work shows the range. Examples have Kandahar (Gerard Butler 2023, AlUla and NEOM, $43M, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, DP MacGregor IAC), Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie 2024, AlUla, dir. Rupert Wyatt, DP Polly Morgan ASC BSC), Cherry (Apple TV+, AlUla), and Born a King (2019). Saudi-resident DPs Wael Abu Mansour and Ahmad Salman brief domestic projects.
Power infrastructure runs on many genset sizes. The fleet covers 27kW, 60kW, and 100kW silent gensets from Cummins or Caterpillar. Movie Quality Power (MQP) distribution and Bates, Socapex, or Lex Cam-Lok 400A camlocks are standard. AlUla desert sets run gen-only — no grid. NEOM construction zones are similarly off-grid.
Day-exterior sun bounce demands big modifiers. Standard kit has 30x30 and 40x40 mirror boards, 20x20 and 30x30 ultra-bounce, plus Wag Bag and Wag Flag negative fill. These shape harsh Saudi sun — the zenith reaches 80°+ in summer.
Night-exterior at AlUla gains from Bortle 1-2 dark-sky ratings. The Hegra UNESCO 2008 site has very low light pollution. That makes it ideal for star-field astrophotography backgrounds.
Heat protocols are required in summer. June-September 45-50°C demands heat-rated cable insulation, frequent breaker checks, and fixture-rated UV protection on Astera tubes. AlUla winter nights drop to 5-10°C.
Compliance covers many bases. Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) planning covers grid tap. CST handles wireless DMX licensing. Saudi Civil Defense covers pyro and stunt lighting effects. GCAM handles type. GOSI payroll sign-ups, 15% VAT, and Saudization Nitaqat quotas all apply — the Nitaqat hires drive the 5% rebates uplift on the CDF 40% rebates. There is no domestic Saudi grip or electric union — global IATSE Local 728 (lighting), Local 80 (grip), Light Crew, and BECTU UK gaffer-tier work routes via Dubai EPS bureaus.

FAQ
Our Lighting Network
What does a gaffer do on set?
Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.
What crew positions are in a lighting department?
A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.
Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?
Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Saudi rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.
How many electricians do I need for my production?
Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians. While larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.
Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?
Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations.
Do you provide generators and power distribution?
We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our Saudi rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.
