Location Scout Services

Finding perfect locations across Saudi Arabia.

Here is how this works in practice. A location scout searches for and reviews potential filming sites based on the creative, tech, and logistical needs of a production. They photograph and document candidates, check accessibility, lighting conditions, sound environment, and permit feasibility. The scout's eye for look value and practical viability saves major time during pre-production planning.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with location scouts who combine a strong visual sense with thorough practical assessment. Our network has pros with extensive knowledge of varied landscapes, urban environments, and build style spaces, ready to find the perfect setting for your production's needs.

Saudi location scouting — AlUla Nabataean, Empty Quarter, NEOM futurist, Riyadh CBD, Jeddah Al-Balad

Our Saudi location scouts deliver tech-scout packages across the kingdom's signature filming geography. AlUla, Hegra, and Madain Salih (UNESCO 2008) bring Nabataean rock-cut tombs and red-sandstone canyons. Recent shoots have Kandahar (2023, Gerard Butler, dir. Ric Roman Waugh), Desert Warrior (2024, Anthony Mackie, dir. Rupert Wyatt), Cherry (Apple TV+), Hellraiser plates (2022), and Born a King (2019).

Other heritage and natural locations round out the slate. Diriyah Al-Turaif (UNESCO 2010) brings mud-brick Najdi build style. Historic Jeddah Al-Balad (UNESCO 2014) brings Hejazi coral-stone Rawasheen. The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn, one hour from Riyadh) brings a dramatic cliff-face. The Empty Quarter brings dune fields. The Red Sea coast covers Farasan Islands, Sharma, the NEOM coastline, and Yanbu. The Asir Mountains and Abha highlands bring the Qatt Al-Asiri custom.

Urban locations cover the capitals. Riyadh CBD covers Kingdom Centre Tower, Al Faisaliah, KAFD, Boulevard, and the JAX District. Jeddah Corniche and the King Fahd Fountain serve coastal urban work. NEOM zones have Sindalah (opened Oct 2024), The Line, Trojena, and Oxagon.

Tech scout deliverables are full. They have 360 photo packs, drone aerial reels (GACA pre-cleared), sun-path and golden-hour analysis, base-camp positioning, 4x4 access routes, and Visit Saudi marketing partnership co-promotion potential.

Permit access splits by jurisdiction. The Saudi Film Commission (Ministry of Culture) is the overarching authority. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) handles all AlUla shoots. The NEOM authority handles the NEOM SEZ. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) handles the capital. The Saudi Heritage Commission handles UNESCO sites. The Ministry of Interior handles security clearances on sensitive zones. GACA handles aerial and drone scouts (uas.gaca.gov.sa).

Mecca and Medina are off-limits. Scouts must be Muslim with permit. Non-Muslim crew are prohibited within the Haram.

Climate factors shape each scout. October-April is the ideal window at 15-30°C. June-September brings 45-50°C heat, which demands heat-management base camps. AlUla winter nights drop to 5-10°C. The Red Sea coast hits 70-90% humid summer. Spring sandstorms (haboob) demand rescheduling protocols.

Schedules also account for prayer-time pauses five times daily plus Friday around 12:00-13:30. During Ramadan, the iftar-to-suhoor 9pm-2am window is peak production time.

Here is how this works in practice. Compliance covers many bases. GCAM handles type. GOSI payroll sign-ups, 15% VAT, and Saudization Nitaqat quotas all apply. Nitaqat hires drive a 5% rebates uplift on the Cultural Development Fund's 40% cash rebates. Ministry of Human Resources work permits also apply. There is no domestic Saudi location-scout union — global Location Managers Guild and Teamsters Local 399 work routes via Dubai EPS bureaus.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a location scout do?

Here is the breakdown. A location scout researches, visits, and photographs potential filming locations that match the creative needs of a production. They check each site for visual suitability, practical logistics, accessibility, and permitting feasibility, then present options to the director and shoot teams with detailed records.

What skills should a location scout have?

A location scout needs a keen photographic eye, strong knowledge of the local geography and build style, and great research and deal-making skills. They must know the practical needs of a film crew. This includes power access, parking, noise levels, and light conditions at different times of day.

What types of productions need a location scout?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Feature films, television series, commercials, and music videos that shoot on practical locations all need location scouting. Any production filming outside of a studio environment gains from a scout who can identify sites that serve the story while meeting logistical and budgetary needs.

How do you match a location scout to my production?

Here is how the picture comes together. We check your visual needs, the types of locations you need, and your shooting schedule, then recommend scouts with deep knowledge of the relevant areas. We prioritize scouts who have set up relationships with property owners and local permitting authorities.

Can a location scout also manage locations during the shoot?

Location scouting and location management are related but distinct roles. A scout finds and presents options, while a location manager handles permits, contracts, logistics, and on-set planning. Some pros do both. We can advise on whether your project needs one or both roles filled.
