SCENE 01 / AERIAL DRONE SERVICES
Aerial Drone Services in Saudi Arabia
Licensed drone operators delivering cinematic aerial footage across Saudi Arabia.
Here is how this works in practice. Aerial drone services deliver cinematic overhead and sweeping perspectives across Saudi Arabia's dramatic terrain—from the sandstone formations of AlUla to the modern skyline of Riyadh. Drones give cost-effective aerial coverage for setting up shots, desert reveals, and any production needing elevated viewpoints over iconic Saudi scenery.
Here is the short of it. We set up fully GACA-licensed aerial drone services that comply with Saudi aviation rules. Our team manages flight permits through the Saudi Film Commission, airspace sign-off, and planning with local authorities to make sure your production captures stunning aerial footage safely and legally at each location.

GACA-licensed cinematic drone — AlUla, NEOM, Empty Quarter, Riyadh CBD
Aerial drone work in Saudi Arabia is jurisdictionally tricky. GACA (General Authority of Civil Aviation) issues base operator and pilot certification. But four overlapping authorities can add layers.
Here is how this works in practice. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) covers any flight inside AlUla county. RCU enforces hard buffers around Hegra (UNESCO 2008 Nabataean tombs), Elephant Rock, and AlUla Old Town. Altitude caps also apply near Maraya concert hall. Maraya is the Guinness 2019 largest mirrored building worldwide — it acts as an unintended sun-reflector hazard at low golden hour.
Here is the short of it. NEOM has its own airspace. The NEOM authority operates a separate special economic zone covering Sindalah, The Line, Trojena, and Oxagon. No aerial work happens without NEOM internal sign-off on top of GACA. Mecca and Medina sit inside military exclusion zones — no exceptions.
We pre-clear all permit tracks in parallel. Permanent GACA relationships compress lead-time to 5-7 days for standard work, and 10-14 days for off-limits-airspace or night-aerial work.
Gear scales from compact to cinema-heavy. Documentary and tourism briefs use the DJI Mavic 3 Cine or Inspire 3 with X9-8K Air. That covers dune-pan reveals across the Empty Quarter (the largest sand desert worldwide, no grid, no permits beyond Saudi Film Commission baseline).
Heavy-lift drones carry tier-1 cinema cameras. Freefly Alta X and custom octocopters fly the ARRI Alexa Mini LF or 35, RED V-Raptor, and Sony Venice 2. Kandahar (Gerard Butler 2023, dir. Ric Roman Waugh, MacGregor IAC aerial DP, AlUla and NEOM, $43M budget) and Desert Warrior (Anthony Mackie 2024, dir. Rupert Wyatt, AlUla, Polly Morgan ASC BSC) both deployed at this tier.
FPV drone work covers chase sequences and proximity action. We use purpose-built freestyle frames carrying a GoPro Hero 12 or RED Komodo light-payload variant.
Here is the breakdown. Climate dictates flight windows. October-April delivers ideal flight weather. June-September 45-50°C heat and spring haboob sandstorms ground operations. We also hold archive Dakar Rally Saudi route files. The rally runs annually each January through the AlUla and Empty Quarter corridor.
FAQ
Aerial Cinematography Expertise
What drone certifications do your pilots have?
All our pilots hold Saudi GACA certifications needed for commercial drone operations. Many also hold certifications from other aviation authorities. We keep full records including flight logs, insurance, and operational manuals.
Can you fly drones in cities like Riyadh?
Here is the breakdown. Urban drone flying in Saudi Arabia needs special sign-off. Riyadh has major off-limits airspace, but we can obtain permits for specific locations with advance notice. We handle all regulatory submissions and set up with authorities.
What cameras can you mount on drones?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. We operate everything from integrated camera systems like DJI Inspire and Mavic lines to heavy-lift platforms carrying RED, ARRI Mini, and other cinema cameras. We match the platform to your image quality needs and shot complexity.
Do you provide FPV drone services?
Yes, we have skilled FPV pilots for dynamic shots including chase sequences, indoor flying, and high-speed proximity work. Our FPV team uses purpose-built drones with cinema-quality cameras for broadcast-ready footage.
What about night aerial filming?
We're signed off for night drone operations with proper lighting systems, boosted safety protocols, and appropriate certifications. Night flying needs extra planning and sign-off, so please talk about needs early.
How far in advance should we book?
Standard aerial shoots can often be arranged with 1-2 weeks notice. Complex operations needing special sign-off, off-limits airspace access, or multi-drone setups may need 3-4 weeks for proper planning and approval.
Related Services
Productions in Saudi Arabia that need this often pair it with Helicopter Filming, High Speed Filming, and Cable Cam Systems for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Camera & Cinematography and Drone Videography.
