Historical Depth

On Location

Factual production at AlUla and Hegra (UNESCO 2008), Diriyah At-Turaif (UNESCO 2010), Historic Jeddah Al-Balad (UNESCO 2014), the Empty Quarter, Edge of the World and Farasan Islands — coordinated with the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah).

We support documentary production across Saudi Arabia's heritage and natural-history map. The Nabataean rock-cut tombs of Hegra in AlUla anchor the archaeology-doc slate (UNESCO 2008, Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site — 111 grand tombs across 52 hectares). Next door sit Jabal Ikmah's open-air library of pre-Islamic carvings and the Dadan civilization site. Diriyah's At-Turaif mud-brick palaces cover the dynastic-history brief (UNESCO 2010, the Al Saud ancestral seat kept by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority). Historic Jeddah Al-Balad (UNESCO 2014) hosts Hejazi-merchant heritage doc work. The Hima rock-art region near Najran (UNESCO 2021) and Al-Ahsa Oasis round out the heritage list (UNESCO 2018, the world's largest self-contained oasis with 2.5 million date palms). Wildlife filming covers the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali, the world's largest contiguous sand desert at 650,000 km²). It also covers the Asir Mountains and Abha cloud forests, the Farasan Islands marine reserves, Saudi falconry, and the National Museum Riyadh's research collections.

Pre-production routes through a few bodies. The Royal Commission for AlUla grants permits for any Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah or Old Town filming. The Heritage Commission covers At-Turaif and Al-Balad. The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) is the Riyadh-based national archive Sherif and main archive source. The Saudi Film Commission handles foreign-crew accreditation. The Cultural Development Fund's 40% cash rebates apply to qualifying documentary spend (35% base + 5% Saudi-content uplift). A Saudi DOP, director or post-prod role triggers the top uplift. Car-backed desert shoots into the Empty Quarter need Border Guard planning. They also need satellite-comms and recovery-car steps. The October–April window covers all outdoor heritage work (15–30°C). AlUla nights cool to 5–10°C in January, ideal for golden-hour interview light. July–September shoots skip daytime in full. We field a Bilingual Arabic-English crew with Najdi, Hejazi and English interview range. We source pros via King Saud University, KAUST and the Saudi Heritage Commission's research network.
