Subjects have the Empty Quarter (the world's largest contiguous sand desert at 650,000 km²), the Asir Mountains and Abha cloud forests, the Farasan Islands marine reserves, and Saudi falconry traditions. Research collections at the National Museum Riyadh also feed factual production.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Pre-production routes through several authorities. The Royal Commission for AlUla issues required permits for any Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, or Old Town filming. The Heritage Commission covers At-Turaif and Al-Balad. The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) is the Riyadh-based national archive and a primary archive source. The Saudi Film Commission handles foreign-crew accreditation.

The Cultural Development Fund's 40% cash rebates applies to qualifying documentary spend. The structure is 35% base plus a 5% Saudi-content uplift. Saudi DOP, director, or post-prod triggers the full uplift.

Car-supported desert shoots into the Empty Quarter need extra planning. Border Guard planning is needed, plus required satellite-comms and recovery-car protocols.

The October-April climate window covers all outdoor heritage work at 15-30°C. AlUla nights cool to 5-10°C in January — perfect for golden-hour interview light. July-September shoots avoid daytime fully.
